Brisbane vs Darwin: the regional difference that changes everything
The most important thing to understand before you choose a city, let alone an agent, is how each is treated for skilled migration. Brisbane is a metropolitan area, grouped with Sydney and Melbourne, so an address inside Brisbane attracts no regional points bonus. Darwin and the entire Northern Territory are designated regional areas, which means a Darwin-based applicant can claim the full 15 points for a subclass 491 nomination, plus access to the regional 494 employer-sponsored visa and the subclass 191 permanent pathway after three years.
For a points-tested applicant sitting just below the cut-off, that 15-point gap is frequently the deciding factor. To see how the rest of your score adds up, run it through our skilled migration points test calculator.
| Factor | Brisbane | Darwin |
|---|---|---|
| Migration classification | Metropolitan | Designated regional area |
| Subclass 491 nomination points | Not available in-city | 15 points |
| Regional 494 employer pathway | No | Yes |
| Subclass 191 PR pathway | No | Yes, after 3 years on a 491/494 |

Each was confirmed as holding active MARA registration on the OMARA public register. We do not publish ratings for migration agents: under the MARA framework and Australian Consumer Law we list only verified registration status, never invented review scores.

MARA-registered migration agents in Darwin
Darwin is a smaller market, and our directory lists two OMARA-verified migration agents in the Darwin area, both confirmed as active on the OMARA public register:
| Agent | Suburb |
|---|---|
| ACET Migration | Darwin City |
| Emmadore Migration and Education Consultancy | Zuccoli |
Because Darwin is a designated regional area, a local agent is well placed to advise on the Northern Territory 491 nomination and 494 regional employer sponsorship. For the full list with verification notes, see our guide to the best migration agents in Darwin.
What it costs in Brisbane and Darwin
Fees are not regulated and there is no per-city schedule. Agents in both cities set their own professional fees, so the same visa can vary by thousands of dollars between offices. Indicative 2026 bands, which apply equally in Brisbane and Darwin:
- Skilled (189/190/491): $3,500-$7,000
- Partner (820/801, 309/100): $3,500-$6,500
- Employer-sponsored (482/186/494): $4,000-$9,000
- Student (500): $1,500-$3,500
- AAT / Tribunal appeals: $5,000-$15,000
These are professional fees only. They sit on top of the government visa application charge (for example $4,640 for the primary subclass 189 applicant), skills assessments, English testing and medicals. For the detailed inclusions read our cost of a migration agent in Australia 2026 guide, and our migration agent fees by city and visa 2026 breakdown.
How to choose between them
- Verify the MARN first. Search the agent on the OMARA register at mara.gov.au and confirm active status before paying anything.
- Let your visa drive the city, not the other way around. If you can live and work in Darwin, the 491 regional points may outweigh the larger Brisbane agent market.
- Match the agent to your subclass. An agent who runs many employer-sponsored 482/186 cases is different from one focused on partner or student visas.
- Insist on a written quote. The MARA Code of Conduct requires an itemised fee agreement separating professional fees, disbursements and government charges.
